We all need a career that allows us to earn a reliable wage, and so getting involved in the painting and decorating world could be a wise move. People are always going to need these jobs performing, and they’re always going to be willing to pay for a professional. With that in mind, this article will serve to highlight how you should go about getting started. There are a number of different routes you could take, but we will focus on the simplest and quickest. At the end of the day, time is of the essence. You need to retrain and start earning as quickly as possible.

The learning stage…

The first thing you need to do is find a qualified and respected painter and decorator who’s willing to take you on in an apprenticeship role. That will allow you to learn on the job, whilst also spending a couple of days each week at college on a specialist course. You’ll probably find yourself learning alongside people who are much younger than you, but that shouldn’t make a difference. You will pick things up much quicker than your classmates as you already have experience of the working world. Most of the other people will have only just left school.

After you’re qualified…

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to go straight out and start your own painting and decorating business as soon as you’ve gained your qualifications. People are never going to trust in your abilities and give you work over competitors until you have lots of experience. So, you should aim to continue helping out other painters and decorators wherever possible. After you have at least three years experience under your belt, you should be ready to register yourself as self-employed and start trading.

Promoting your business and finding customers…

While you might think customers are just going to land in your lap, you’re very much mistaken. You are in a very tough marketplace, and there are many things you’ll have to do to succeed. Firstly, you need to concentrate your efforts on getting an online presence. You should aim to build a website and open various social media accounts. Don’t worry too much if you haven’t got a big budget though, as all this can be done for free.

Where to go from there…

Once your business has been registered, and you’ve found lots of customers, you should be pretty happy with yourself. While some people would choose to keep things simple, there are other options at that stage. For instance, you could move up the chain somewhat by renting a warehouse and buying some equipment like a White Mountain process tote agitator. That would allow you to scale upwards and create your own paints.

Well guys, we hope you’ve found this article interesting. You should now have a good idea about what you need to do to become a professional painter and decorator. The entire process should take you no longer that around three and a half years. Good luck with everything, we are rooting for you.
